Description

A short preface notes the need to trade off lift to speed. Airships have lift. Modern jets have speed. We look for a middle ground with modern engines at about 300 knots. Chapter 1 proposes a dirigiplane, half plane and half dirigible. This craft can cut its air drag in half by deflating in flight for increased speed at the expense of fuel efficiency when required. The bottom half has a more rugged design for support at high speeds than a traditional airship. The airship has wings for higher speed and fuel storage at lower speed. It requires no runway, can carry awkward and heavy payloads, minimize fire through nitrogen about the air bags if filled with hydrogen. The second chapter explains briefly how to deflate the balloon in flight. A central spine can be lowered to the side of the airship while the support ribs go under the bottom half of the ship. The alternate ribs collapse down underneath the falling skin of the top. The excess airship skin is rolled up for fast speed, and unrolled for re-inflation.
